Summit Junior Baseball

Minutes:  Minutes of 1/17/12 meeting were accepted and approved.
 
 
Officer’s Reports:
 
President – Maldonado
 
Mr. Maldonado welcomed the board.  He introduced two new board members to the group: Mrs. Isralowitz and Mrs. Goldstein who will be running the kid umpiring program this year.
 
Mr. Maldonado thanked everyone involved in the recent baseball evaluation and draft process for grades 3 through 6.  Overall, the feedback received was very positive.  Coaches liked being involved in the evaluations, and the draft worked well.
 
There was some discussion on ways to improve the draft system and the order in which coaches draft players.
 
Mr. Hayford volunteered to run the draft for the 2012-2013 season.
 
Registration Update – McDonald
 
Mrs. McDonald said that baseball and softball registration is now complete for most grades.  K-2 and the Suburban League registrations will remain open until March 1st.  However, there may be a late fee involved for those registrations. 
 
Registration numbers are on track from last year, and the number of kids participating will continue to go up as registration continues for the younger grades over the next few weeks.
 
Mrs. McDonald was very pleased with the amount of monetary donations collected by adding the donation box on the on-line registration form.
 
Financial Report – Kaufman
 
As of January 31st, the current cash balance is $164,712.61.  Cash balance significantly increased over the last month because of registration and sponsorship fees. Mr. Kaufman reported that the budget is on target compared to previous years.
 
Operations – Floegel
 
Mr. Floegel said that the kid umpiring program is now in place.
 
He also shared that significant, positive feedback has been received for both the Friday night clinics, run by Extra Innings, and for Coach Zaleski’s Summit Baseball Clinic.  Big Righty’s “Pre-Season Pitching & Throwing Clinic”, run by Coach Welsh, will run the last two Saturdays in March and registration is now open.
 
Personnel and Spring Travel – Miller
 
Spring Recreation teams are in place for Grades 3 through 6, and team announcements have been made.  Since registration is still open for the younger grades, teams will be announced in March.
 
There will be a coaches’ clinic in March to go over league rules.  
 
The draft for the Suburban League will take place over the next few weeks.  At the present time, there are six teams.
 
In addition to the Spring Recreation teams, there will also be one Spring Travel Team for 10U - 13U.  The purpose of Spring Travel is to expose as many kids as possible to a more competitive atmosphere and to get them ready for summer ball. 
 
Softball - Calabrese
 
Registration for Softball is now complete and there was an excellent response.  Mr. Calabrese shared that they are keeping numbers to 11 girls per team. 
 
Mr. Calabrese shared that the first two canopies for the dugouts, at Memorial Field, will hopefully be installed before the spring season starts. 
 
Fields – Coburn:
 
All fields are still closed. The batting cage at Wilson Field is in need of repair.
 
Marketing – Douglas
 
Elk’s Fundraiser: The fundraiser has been set for April 27th at the Elk’s Club, and La Pastaria will be providing food for the event.  Tickets will be sold on a per person basis.  Money collected will be used to fund SJBB baseball and softball programs, and to make capital improvements to fields. In addition, there will be a live auction and some silent auction items as well.  There will also be a 50/50 raffle.  Some unique items will be auctioned such as tickets to sporting events and sports memorabilia.
 
Pizzafest: A new date has been added.  There will now be Pizzafest for fifth and sixth grades on March 22nd at the middle school.  Softball will also be adding another Pizzafest date, which will be announced soon.
 
Sponsors:  The majority of sponsors are in place.  Uniforms will soon be ordered with sponsor’s names on them.
 
 
 
Other Business
 
Newsletter:  Mr. Douglas suggested a SJBB newsletter to be emailed out once or twice a month to membership.  Mrs. Queripel has volunteered to organize that endeavor.
